The evidence layer behind defensible R&D decisions

A current vacancy in Bengaluru offers a practical view of how a science-led company organizes intellectual-property work. 3M is recruiting a Specialist, Patent Search within its Global Legal Service Center. The role will provide patent-search and analysis services to laboratory teams and IP legal personnel across biology, chemistry, chemical engineering, physics, materials science and polymer science. It also calls for work with commercial and public search platforms, technical claims, invention records and filing strategies [1][2].

For corporate R&D leaders, the point is operational. Patent intelligence can affect whether a programme receives further investment, whether an invention is filed, whether a product needs redesign, and whether a technology can move towards licensing or commercial launch. The vacancy does not prove that 3M intends to buy external patent services. It does show that patent analysis is being treated as part of the working connection between research and legal teams.

Start with the decision

A search request should begin with the decision it must support. Patentability, prior art, freedom to operate, validity and technology intelligence involve related records, but they ask different questions.

The European Patent Office defines prior art broadly as evidence that an invention was already known. It also warns that no prior-art search, including an official examination, is conclusive proof of novelty [5]. Search quality therefore depends on technical interpretation, jurisdiction, dates, patent-family relationships, legal status and non-patent literature. A list of documents is not yet an answer.

Patent searching is similar to an analytical laboratory test. Database access is the instrument. The invention disclosure, terminology, classifications and inclusion rules are the sample preparation. Poor preparation can produce a polished report that answers the wrong question.

R&D decision Evidence focus Likely action
Is the concept potentially patentable? Earlier patents and non-patent literature Refine claims, gather data or reconsider filing
Can a planned product enter a market? Live claims in relevant jurisdictions Design around, seek a licence or obtain legal advice
Where is technical activity concentrated? Patent families, owners, classifications and filing trends Direct research, partnership or acquisition work
Can an asserted patent be challenged? Earlier disclosures and claim-specific evidence Support validity or invalidity analysis

Build a traceable evidence chain

Research teams often describe inventions in scientific language, while patent databases organize information through claims, classifications, applicants, inventors and publication families. Data Curation and Data Management connect those systems.

The working record should preserve the question received, technical concepts, synonyms, classification codes, jurisdictions, date limits, search strings, exclusions, reviewed documents and analyst comments. That record allows an IP liaison, patent attorney or scientist to understand how the result was produced.

WIPO guidance recommends combining keywords, synonyms, patent classifications and exclusions while balancing precision and recall [6][7]. The method matters because an overly narrow query can miss relevant prior art, while an overly broad query creates review volumes that conceal useful documents.

Once the records are curated, Data Analytics can compare assignees, technology clusters, filing behavior, citation relationships and legal events. Data Visualization can make those findings accessible to R&D portfolio committees and Technology Transfer teams. The charts still need a defined dataset and documented assumptions.

Treat AI as a controlled layer

Artificial Intelligence can expand terminology, classify documents, rank results, summarize claims and help analysts review large result sets. Minesoft describes Origin as an AI-supported patent-intelligence environment for search, classification, monitoring, collaboration and analytics [12].

The contrarian point is that more AI is rarely the first remedy for a weak search workflow. If the invention disclosure is incomplete, ownership names are not normalised, technical taxonomies are inconsistent, or search histories are not retained, automation processes the same defects faster.

Human review remains necessary for claim interpretation, patentability conclusions, freedom-to-operate assessments, regulatory implications and filing strategy. AI output should be treated as an analytical aid rather than a legal opinion.

A current operating signal

3M’s recruitment specification includes independent management of incoming requests, technical and claim assessment, stakeholder instructions, recordkeeping and traceability [1][2]. These duties connect discovery with Data Management rather than treating searching as a one-off database exercise.

The wider corporate record supports that interpretation. In its 2025 annual filing, 3M stated that its R&D activities produce inventions protected through patents or trade secrets and that patents, trademarks and trade secrets provide competitive advantages in many businesses [3]. The company also maintains a public patent-marking resource for selected US products [4].

Together, these sources show an active internal IP system covering research, filing, portfolio administration and product-level patent information. They do not disclose whether work will be outsourced or identify a procurement decision-maker.

Add capacity without losing control

A scalable model can keep decision ownership inside the company while using specialist support for defined work packages. These may include prior art search, freedom-to-operate support, patent landscape support, portfolio analysis, patent drafting and filing support, and IP protection strategy.

Saturo Global supports research, data and IP workflows through Data Curation & Management, Indexing & Abstracting, Strategic Patent Support and Data Visualization. Its published patent services include patent and literature searching, FTO search, portfolio analysis, landscaping, docketing and drafting support [9].

For India-focused research, Saturo Global’s Indian Patent Database states that it provides records dating from 1912, with manually curated data from 2013 onwards in PDF and XML formats [10]. It can complement official resources such as InPASS and PATENTSCOPE, both listed by the Indian Patent Office for public patent searching [8].

PatBase can support structured global patent retrieval and analysis. Origin can assist with AI-supported search, classification and collaborative review. Chemical Explorer, now developed within Minesoft’s chemical-search offering, can support structure, similarity and substructure research in patent documents [11][12][13]. These tools are most useful when analysts work from a clear search objective and return traceable findings to R&D and legal stakeholders.
